The latest study shows how easy it is for patients to be prescribed and dispensed of Viagra, the first prescription drug used for erectile dysfunction.
Researchers from the University of Manchester studied the prescribing information of 468 adult patients with ED, who were either prescribed sildenafil, Viagra or other erectile dysfunction treatments over a two-week period.
They found that, while the majority of patients received the most appropriate treatment, a minority of patients were still prescribed sildenafil and their prescribing habits were not the same.
"The results of this study show that patients who are prescribed Viagra are at an increased risk of experiencing adverse events in the first half of the treatment period," said the study's lead author, Dr. Peter C. Brown, of the University of Manchester, and co-author, Professor of Pharmacoepidemiology and Medicine at the University of Manchester.
"The findings of this study demonstrate that even though a large proportion of patients were prescribed sildenafil, there were still some adverse events in the first half of the treatment period."
The study was published in theJournal of Sexual Medicine.
"We believe that the results of the study may support future research into the treatment of erectile dysfunction," said Brown. "Further studies are required to determine the best course of action for patients and physicians, and to confirm the effectiveness of treatment."
The study's lead author, Dr. Brown, and co-authors were supported by the Medical Research Council.
